The first half of life is for learning. The second half of life is for living.

The New Mid is a frank, funny look at women in mid-life and their day-to day-struggles and successes, as well as the big stuff - questions about meaning, fulfillment and happiness. It’s a place where women in their 40’s and up are breaking societal boundaries and expectations, while still dealing with real life issues such as caring for aging parents or restarting their careers.  You’ll get real talk with nothing held back about the topics you care about, with experts weighing in on health, sex, finances, relationships and everything in between.

After spending time in local news and watching what was happening to her community, Shana Knight decided to do something about it. She left her television production job to get hired at United Way but while there was so much civil unrest and being home quarantined she realized she wanted to do more. In today's episode I speak with Shana on how her heart has lead her to help people not only through United Way but by starting a Black Owned Farmer's Market called "Soul Street." This has given black business owners the opportunity to market their businesses as well as start new ones. Even though Shana is not yet thirty, she gives us great insight into following your heart and making a difference in your community.

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Shana learned about United Way while she was in college.
  • United Way helps communities in many different ways through health education, financial stability, and relief for organizations that provide critical care.
  • United Way also has a program to fight systemic racism.
  • During COVID Shana wanted to do more to help her community especially after all the unrest during the summer.
  • Shana and a group of others founded the organization "Soul Street" that is a black owned farmers market. It helps black owned businesses find other black owned businesses. It gives them a voice.
  • It is helping build generational black owned wealth. She wanted children to see people that look like them own their own business.
  • Shana wanted to see real change.
  • If you face an obstacle it is there for a reason. It's there to teach you something and build from your experiences.
  • Take something negative and channel it into something positive.
  • If you believe in yourself, you can do it!
